When following a weight loss or weight maintenance programme, it is hugely important not to let yourself get hungry. We recommend having a mid morning snack and a mid afternoon snack. The reason for this is after a few hours of eating, your blood sugar and energy levels start to drop and when they get too low, you start to crave! This usually leads to reaching for something sweet to get a quick energy boost. Having a few snacks throughout the day also means you won’t sit down to lunch or dinner starving so you are able to reduce the portion size of your main meals.

Snacks can be easy to prepare and add variety to the diet. The trick is to vary them and use a little imagination! Try this petit pois hummus for a real little tasty but health treat!

Petit Pois Hummus
– 1 tin chick peas
– 1 tablespoon tahini
– A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
– 1 small clove of garlic, crushed
– Handful of frozen petit pois
– A few leaves of basil
– Seasoning to taste

Pour boiling hot water over frozen petit pois and leave for a minute or until they start to soften.
Drain the water away.
Drain tinned chickpeas, keeping a little liquid / juice to loosen the hummus.
Pulse all ingredients together in a food processor. Slowly measure in a little of the leftover liquid until desired consistency is achieved. This can be served chunky or smooth depending on your preference.

This hummus is so tasty pretty much any way to eat it but a few of my favourites ways to enjoy it are with sticks of raw carrot, pepper, cucumber, celery, or on a few oatcakes. You won’t even feel you’re following a weight loss programme!
